About Appetite Suppressants

Home » Hospital Services » Family Medicine » Medical Weight Loss » About Appetite Suppressants

What’s Best for You?

The use of prescribed appetite suppressants can be an extremely effective tool to aid you in your weight loss program.

At Northern Medical Weight Loss, medications are prescribed only in conjunction with following a physician-directed nutrition and exercise plan, as these actions greatly enhance the effectiveness of any prescribed medications. During your medical consultation, the professionals at Northern Medical Weight Loss will evaluate your medical history, and screen you for any contraindications to help determine which (if any) medications would be best for you.

Are the medications that you use considered safe?

Yes. All the medications offered to patients are FDA approved.

Why should I take an appetite suppressant?

Several safe and effective prescription medicines and natural supplements can be used to suppress hunger and add support to your dietary and lifestyle plan. Appetite suppressants do work, and can be very useful in kick-starting a diet. They also increase your metabolism, and your energy level.

Does your practice use the medication combination known as Phen/Fen?

No. We do not use the medication combination known as Phen/Fen.Fenfluramine (also known as Pondimin) and Dexfenfluramine (Redux) are two different medications that were used by some doctors in the past for the treatment obesity. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) banned their use in 1997.

Do any of your medications contain Ephedrine & Caffeine, Ephedra, or Ma Huang?

No. None of our medications contain any of these substances. While some over the counter products may contain these, we consider these herbal products unsafe and do not endorse the use of any of these products for safe weight loss.

What medications do you use?

You may be prescribed any of the following three appetite suppressants: Phentermine (Adipex P; lonomim), Phendimetrazine (Bontril), and Diethylpropion (Tenuate). We may also prescribe Human Chorionic Gonatropin (HCG) injections.

Can medications replace physical activity or changes in eating habits as a way to lose weight?

No. The use of appetite suppressant medications to treat obesity should be combined with physical activity and improved diet to lose and maintain weight successfully over the long term.

Do I have to be a certain weight to receive diet pills?

Yes. You must have a BMI of 25 (overweight) or greater to receive appetite suppressants. After you reach your goal of normal weight we will allow you ample time to transition off the pills.
