Elijah Russell, Exercise Physiologist at Northern Cardiac Rehabilitation, has been with the practice for five years.

Elijah plays an important role in each patient's treatment, determining what types of exercises are appropriate based on the patient's medical history and other health factors. "The goal of treatment is to increase the strength of the heart, so that patients can return to completing their 'activities of daily living' (ADLs) more easily; simple tasks like getting dressed, taking a shower, and washing dishes."

While he enjoys the technical aspect of his job very much, forming relationships with patients is Elijah's favorite part of his day. "Because we see the same patients for 4-5 months, 2-3 times a week, you really get to know them. You learn their interests and can really form a bond that only helps with their care. Being able to joke with patients and bring a light-hearted energy only helps them to be more comfortable while they are here, which leads to more positive results."

Carmen Wilmoth, Charge Nurse at Northern Cardiac Rehabilitation, has been with the practice for eight years.

The part of Carmen's job she looks forward to the most is watching patients improve their overall well-being. "I also love to see new friendships being made while they are in the program with other patients who have had similar experiences," said Carmen.

"When patients have experienced a heart event, they often feel anxious about their health," she said. "I love to see them increase their goals and leave here with a better feeling about themselves and a new outlook on their health."

Carmen's number one heart health tip is simple: "Take care of your body." Eating a balanced diet, regularly exercising, and stopping smoking are all crucial to maintaining a healthy heart.
