General Surgery Procedures

Gallbladder Removal

Your gallbladder is a small, pear shaped organ that is located below your liver on the right side of your abdomen. It helps the body by collective and storing digestive fluid that is produced by the liver.

A cholecystectomy or gallbladder removal may be necessary if you have experienced gallstones, pain or improper flow of digestive fluids. It is a common surgery. This procedure can be done by our physicians with laparoscopic tools which involve small surgical tools and a camera.

Gallbladder removal may be recommended if you have the following situations:

  • Gallstones in the gallbladder (cholelithiasis)
  • Gallstones in the bile duct (choledocholithiasis)
  • Gallbladder inflammation (cholecystitis)
  • Pancreas inflammation (pancreatitis)

Hemorrhoid Surgery

Hemorrhoids can be painful and uncomfortable. They are swollen veins along the anal canal. Though painful, they are typically not serious. They are caused by too much pressure in the rectal area, pressure in the tissues that causes them to swell, pregnancy and increased weight gain. At Surry Surgical Associates, we assist in hemorrhoid surgery to help relieve pain and bleeding. Hemorrhoids are removed in this procedure if other treatments have not helped.

Symptoms of hemorrhoids are:

  • Bleeding during bowel movements or in rectal area
  • Itching
  • Rectal pain and sensitivity

Hernia Repair Surgery

A hernia is a protrusion of an organ or the fascia (fatty tissue) of an organ through the wall of the cavity that contains it. They are caused by a combination of pressure or weakness in muscle areas. This muscle weakness can occur at birth or through situations later in life such as heavy lifting. At Northern General Surgery, we offer surgery that helps to relieve hernia and repair damage caused by pressure and pain.

There are several different types of hernias, some of those being:

  • Inguinal—Most Common—found in the groin
  • Femoral
  • Umbilical
  • Incisional
  • Diaphragmatic

Any condition that increases the pressure of the abdominal cavity may contribute to the formation or worsening of a hernia. Examples include:

  • Obesity,
  • Heavy lifting,
  • Coughing,
  • Straining during a bowel movement or urination
  • Chronic lung disease, and
  • Fluid in the abdominal cavity.
  • A family history of hernias can make you more likely to develop a hernia.

Laparoscopic

We recognize that any type of surgery can involve recovery times. At Northern General Surgery we use the best techniques to help you recover quickly. Laparoscopic Surgery, also known as minimally invasive surgery, is the modern surgical technique in which operations are performed through small incisions with the assistance of a video camera and several thin instruments.

During the surgical procedure, small incisions are made and plastic tubes called ports are placed through these incisions. The camera and the instruments are then introduced through the ports which allow access to the inside of the patient. The camera transmits an image of the organs inside the abdomen onto a television monitor. The surgeon is not able to see directly into the patient without the traditional large incision. The video camera becomes a surgeon’s eyes in laparoscopy surgery, since the surgeon uses the image from the video camera positioned inside the patient’s body to perform the procedure.

Some benefits of minimally invasive or laparoscopic procedures are:

  • quicker recovery times
  • shorter hospital stays
  • earlier return to full activities
  • much smaller scars

Minor Dermatological Surgery

At Northern General Surgery we perform a range of minor dermatological surgeries. Many common dermatologic procedures are done as office procedures to test for a wide variety of diseases or to treat often minor dermatologic conditions in a quick and noninvasive manner. These procedures can also be performed under local anesthetics.

Some examples would be:

  • Mole Removal
  • Skin Tags
  • Skin Lesion Removal

Podiatry Care

At Northern Regional Hospital, podiatry procedures are performed in our Outpatient Surgery Center that allow the patient to return home in as little as two to three hours.

Podiatry Services Offered:

  • Bunionectomy
  • Heel Spur Removal
  • Hammer Toe Correction
  • Achilles Tendon Reattachment
