Rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors across Surry County and Southwest Virginia are volunteering at Northern Regional Hospital during their summer break. Thirty-seven Junior Volunteers fill the hospital hallways throughout June, July, and August, gaining valuable experience in the healthcare field.
“Each January, we distribute applications to area high schools to recruit students for our Junior Volunteer Program,” said Tina Beasley, Director of Foundation & Volunteer Services. After applications are received, each one is carefully reviewed, and a select group of students is chosen to participate. Because of the tremendous interest in the program, not every applicant can be accepted, making it a highly competitive opportunity. Once selected, we partner with departments throughout the hospital to match students with volunteer experiences that allow them to learn, grow, and make a positive impact. Our goal is to provide each student with a rewarding experience while exposing them to the many career opportunities available within healthcare.
The Junior Volunteer Program is an important part of building tomorrow’s healthcare workforce by introducing students to healthcare careers early in their educational journey. Whether serving in clinical or non-clinical departments, students gain firsthand insight into the wide range of professionals who work together to care for patients and support the hospital. Just as importantly, they develop a heart for service, compassion, and giving back to their community through volunteerism. We’re proud to help inspire the next generation of healthcare professionals while teaching valuable life skills that will benefit them wherever their future leads.”
These students, both new and returning, represent a wide range of local schools and have generously chosen to spend their summer break giving back to their community.
