North Surry High School cheerleaders partnered with the Mammography Department of Northern Regional Hospital for a Breast Cancer Awareness Walk on Wednesday, October 26, 2002.
The cheerleaders, along with North Surry High School Food and Nutrition class, the North Surry ROTC, some staff and members of the community pulled together to organize the event and raised funds for mammograms for those in need.
A 1.75-mile course was mapped out and marked by the ROTC students. Twenty-seven cheerleaders, along with several staff members, and ROTC members walked the route after school. Three North Surry staff members who are breast cancer survivors, Susan Atkins, Fonda Bledsoe, and Barbara Moncus, led the walk as Grand Marshals and received pink Breast Cancer Awareness Northern Regional Hospital tumbler mugs.
At each checkpoint cheerleaders and students cheered on the walkers. The Food and Nutrition class provided pink cupcakes, Food Lion donated bottled water and snacks, and Tammy Branch provided cookies and chips to participants.
The average cost of a 3D mammogram is $250, and organizers had hoped to raise enough funds to cover one mammogram for someone in need. Each participant paid a walk entry fee of $5 and the group accepted donations. Thanks to the participants and generous donors, the group raised $880 for the Northern Cares Foundation for mammograms for those in need.
