Hospital puts Junior Volunteers to work

Some area teenagers were busy this summer. Rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors from across the county dedicated their summer break to volunteering at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Fifty-eight Junior Volunteers filled the hospital hallways throughout June, July and August logging 3,037 hours.

More than 100 applications were received this year to fill the available slots for the annual program. Unfortunately the hospital cannot accommodate an unlimited amount of students in the program so Volunteer Coordinator Tina Beasley is tasked with combing through the applications, essays, recommendation letters, and interviews to narrow the pool.

“Beginning in January, we send out applications to all area high schools seeking junior volunteers,” said Beasley. “After applications are received, we begin working with all the hospital departments to determine opportunities available. Visitor Restrictions Update: Effective February 10, 2026

Due to community transmission of influenza and COVID-19, Northern Regional Hospital is strongly encouraging masks for all visitors.

Visitors should postpone their visit if they have nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, a cough, sore throat, and/or a fever of 100 degrees or higher. Visitors should be free of symptoms and fever for at least 24 hours. If visitors are actively coughing but have no other symptoms, they should be offered a mask.
